Apprenticeship to Jesus is the process of aligning ourselves under the Lordship of Jesus. We believe that the purpose of Jesus’ life and teaching was not to impart information, but rather to make significant change in the lives of those who have ears to hear. As we learn to live as apprentices to Jesus, we will experience Spiritual formation into Christ-likeness. Spiritual Formation is the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives that brings about the transformation of our character. Our job is to cooperate with the Spirit’s work. As apprentices, we engage in various practices to create space for God to transform us into the character of Christ.
A person who is learning to live as an apprentice to Jesus and growing in their formation will…
Trust the Sovereignty of God
Not be rocked by external circumstances but increase in trust in the goodness and sovereignty of God (John 6:28-40).
Find Their Identity in Christ
We become less attached to the temptation to define our value or worth on the externals, and learn to rest in our identity as Christ’s beloved (Col. 2:6-12).
Routinely and Easily Obey the Things of God
A genuine belief that God’s ways are indeed better leads us to follow and obey (John 15:1-17).
Increasingly Manifest the Fruit of the Spirit
Our character is increasingly becoming more loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and self-controlled (Gal. 5:22-26).
Care for the Marginalized
A central aspect of Jesus’ ministry is to care for the forgotten and oppressed (Matthew 25:34- 40).
Live More Simply
A growing desire to live more simply and give away our money, time, talents, and other resources for the glory of God and to be used to further God’s mission (Matt. 6:25-34).
Engage in Spiritual Companionship
God created us to express his image in the context of community. In community we learn not only how to be with and to love one another, we also learn how to be with God and to love him. The life and health of the community is essential in establishing a life of going deep with God (John 17:20-23).
As Jesus’ apprentices, we are invited to be his agents of mission in this world, proclaiming the good news of the availability of the Kingdom of God (Matt. 28:16-20).
